Ships in the Night
I find this painting cheerful and exciting. I see the ships having individual colors depicting their story and destination. The white spaces also intensify the individuality of each figure. The curvey shapes create a sense of movement. The bottom has a life of its own, almost like an undersea train. On the bottom right I see a blue whale with a mermaid riding on his back. The figures to their left look like railway cars. The bright cobalt blue shape center right looks like a Viking ship. It is interesting that even though the painting is filled with wildly shaped figures, the painting as a whole forms a perfect rectangle.
