  1. This painting is extraordinary because of both the bodily and facial expressions! At first glance the creatures’ expressions look happy and even a bit hilarious. The wildly different creature on the left seems so delighted to be talking to this group as he holds his walking stick. He is the leader of all the tiny creatures on the floor around him. It looks like he is showing the group, in a friendly way, a small representation of a bomb that his people have created to protect themselves. The walking stick reminds me of the saying, “Walk softly and carry a big stick”. The three in the homeland group look on in awe as they listen to the visitor’s “friendly” threats. The first of the three has a big stick of his own and actually has a much bigger bomb to support his group. The third in the group has an intrigued but knowing expression on his face. He sees the visitors acting very friendly but knows they are actually committing a huge act of aggression. Foreign relations can be quite tricky and not always what they seem.

All that aside, the creature on the left is so funny and cute, and the face of the creature on the right also tickles my funny bone! The whole scene is quite hilarious at first sight. I think this painting could be interpreted in many other more upbeat and humorous ways.

  2. WONDERFUL! That is the neatest bunch of Foreigners I have ever seen. I couldn’t stop laughing for a good number of minutes. Every one is charming in its orginality. Would that we could follow that spirit and individuality! It’s really beautiful!! Kate

  3. I just love the friendly, curious sweet faces on these foreigners! I especially like the guy on the left. Made me laugh, but also made me feel happy that the folks on the right seemed so welcoming and happy to see this very different looking being. Wish that we could all accept each others differences…all of our differences. This is a fabulous political statement.
Love it. You should share it with the Brunswick Voices Immigrants group.
